As a registered Civil Celebrant with the Australian Attorney General’s office, I am legally authorised to marry couples in Australia.
For every couple to be married in Australia, there are very specific official documents you each need to produce for me to see.
You will need:
1. a current, government issued photo identity – such as a Driver’s License or a Passport, plus
2. your original Birth Certificate (or an Official Extract/Certified Copy of the original). If you were not born in an English-speaking country, then your Birth document will need to be translated into English – by a recognised translation service (the Australian Embassy in your country of birth can assist you with this requirement).
It is acceptable to use your valid Passport in place of a Birth Certificate.
3. The legal application (N.O.I.M. or Notice of Intent to Marry form) must be completed and lodged with me at least 1 month prior to the date of the ceremony.
If you are not able to be physically present at the time of us completing the application, then I can sight your scanned documents via email attachments, temporarily – however you must bring them with you to Cairns for the ceremony because I must sight the original papers prior to the ceremony.
Under the Law in Australia, you cannot be married if both of you are below 18 years of age. If only one of you is less than 18, it’s best if you call me to discuss this further and then I can tell you what is required to make this possible.
Also, if either of you have been married before, there is additional documentation I need to sight. If this is relevant to your situation, we can then discuss further when we meet.
